2017 Accomplishments
- Sponsored the Summer Celebration Booth: Featured Native Garden tours, sing alongs, shopping bag give-away; met and greeted many supporters.
- Staged the Red Zone Rally: Community rallied to support Saving Mercerdale Park and enjoyed live music, photos, balloons, sign waving, postcard signing.
- Made numerous appearances before City Council to advocate Saving Mercerdale Park from private development.
- Restored the Mercerdale Park Native Garden: Volunteers contributed nearly 250 hours restoring the Mercerdale Park Native Garden to its natural beauty.
- Improved social media presence: Updated website, launched Facebook page, uploaded to website protest songs and photo mock-up of MICA in Mercerdale Park, established Friends of CCMIP email list and initiated Nextdoor conversations. All to increase community awareness.
- Published numerous relevant articles and letters in the Mercer Island Reporter.
- Hosted “Reuse and Re-purpose” Recycling Center community workshop at MI Library.
- Installed historical Recycling Center display at MI Library.
- Hosted Saturday morning walks around Mercerdale Park. Distributed “Save Mercerdale Park” t-shirts and shopping bags to participants.
- Helped facilitate the City’s removal of MICA’s intrusive sign from Mercerdale Park. Installed (with City approval) “Welcome To The Mercerdale Park Native Garden” sign at entrance.
- Opposed and helped stop passage of Council’s proposed costly measure to change name of Parks and Recreation Department.
- Supported efforts to prevent the unnecessary restriping of 77th Ave SE.
- Placed “Save Mercerdale Park” informational banners in highly visible and strategic locations: Mercerdale Park fence, across from MI library, and on SE 24th.
