A BIG WIN FOR MERCER ISLAND PARKS

At its March 15th meeting, the Mercer Island City Council voted to accept a proposed amendment to the Comprehensive Plan that would add a new Land Use Element to create a Parks Zone.

Councilmember Lisa Anderl, who proposed the amendment, said, “a parks zone would serve to provide greater zoning protection against development and encroachment in our parks.” She added, “I think this is the right step toward expressing the community’s desires and priorities with regard to preserving, protecting, and not developing our parks.”

A key strategic vision of Concerned Citizens for MI Parks (“CCMIP”) is the preservation and protection of our parks. We are sincerely heartened by the City Council’s action, and we fully support this action.

The updating of the Comprehensive Plan is not expected to be completed until early 2024, and the Planning Commission will be charged with overseeing the process.

CCMIP, along with many other community members, will be actively monitoring the process as more details are released.

As always, we appreciate all of your support. We hope you continue to enjoy the many benefits of Mercer Island’s parks and open spaces.
